What is JEE?

"JEE is your chance to study engineering at top colleges—let’s make it happen!" — Kalpit Veerwal

JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination. It’s the main exam for students who want to join engineering colleges in India. There are two levels—JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main is run by the National Testing Agency (NTA), and more than 9 lakh students take it every year. If you do well in JEE Main, you can get into colleges like NITs and IIITs, or you can try JEE Advanced for IITs. JEE Advanced is tougher and only the top 2.5 lakh students from Main can take it. I scored full marks in JEE Main and got into IIT Bombay—this exam can change your life too.

JEE Main vs. JEE Advanced

Let’s break it down. JEE Main happens two times a year, and it has 90 questions—30 each in Physics, Chemistry, and Math. You get 3 hours to finish, and it’s worth 300 marks. There are 20 multiple-choice questions per subject, where you get 4 marks for a right answer and lose 1 mark for a wrong one. There are also 10 numerical questions per subject, but you only need to answer 5—no penalty for mistakes there. JEE Advanced is harder, happens once a year, and has a different number of questions each time—usually around 54 to 60, worth 180 to 306 marks. JEE Main gets you into NITs, while JEE Advanced is for IITs—I cleared both, and you can too with the right plan.

JEE Syllabus

The JEE syllabus comes from your Class 11 and 12 NCERT books. For Physics, you’ll study topics like Mechanics, Electricity, and Modern Physics—these make up most of the paper. In Chemistry, it’s split into Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry—things like reactions and the periodic table. Math covers Algebra, Calculus, and Coordinate Geometry—think equations and graphs. You can find the full syllabus on jeemain.nta.nic.in for Main and iit.ac.in for Advanced. I focused on the big topics like Mechanics and Organic Chemistry—they helped me score high with less effort.

Who Can Take JEE?

To take JEE Main, you need to pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Math. For top colleges like NITs, you need at least 75% marks in 12th if you’re general category, or 65% if you’re SC/ST. There’s no age limit, and you get 3 tries after 12th. JEE Advanced needs you to be in the top 2.5 lakh from Main. Lots of students take it again—over 40% are droppers. I got it in one go, but it’s all about how well you prepare.

How to Prepare for JEE

Start by getting the syllabus—it tells you what to study. Use good books like HC Verma for Physics, NCERT for Chemistry, and RD Sharma for Math—AcadBoost’s free notes have everything too. Practice with old JEE papers—you can download them from NTA’s website. Try mock tests 2 or 3 times a week—I scored over 280 in practice before the real exam. Spend an hour a day revising formulas and weak areas. Sleep well and stay calm—it’s a big part of doing your best.

Why JEE is Important

JEE can get you into amazing colleges. JEE Main opens doors to NITs where you can get jobs paying Rs 15-20 lakh a year. JEE Advanced is for IITs—only the top 2.5 lakh from Main can try it. I used JEE to go from a small town to IIT Bombay—it’s a big deal for your future.
