JEE Main Paper Pattern

The JEE Main, which stands for Joint Entrance Examination, is one of the most popular engineering entrance exams in India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and serves as the gateway to the most prestigious engineering colleges in the country, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

The JEE Main paper pattern has undergone several changes over the years, and it is important for students to understand the current pattern to prepare for the exam effectively.

JEE Main Exam Pattern

The exam consists of two papers - Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is conducted for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses, while Paper 2 is conducted for admission to B.Arch and B.Planning courses.

JEE Main Paper 1

The JEE Main paper pattern for Paper 1 is as follows:

The exam is conducted for a total of 300 marks.
There are three sections in the exam - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Each section consists of 30 questions, and each question carries 4 marks.
There is negative marking for incorrect answers. For every incorrect answer, one mark is deducted.
You have a choice in certain questions, and have to do only 75 questions. There are 10 numerical answer questions in each subject with no negative marking, and you have to solve only 5 of them.

JEE Main Paper 2

The JEE Main paper pattern for Paper 2 is as follows:

The exam is conducted for a total of 400 marks.
There are three parts in the exam - Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing Test.
Mathematics and Aptitude Test consist of 50 questions each, and each question carries 4 marks. Drawing Test is subjective and evaluated for a total of 100 marks.
There is negative marking for incorrect answers in Mathematics and Aptitude Test. For every incorrect answer, one mark is deducted.

Recent Changes in JEE Main

One of the recent changes in the JEE Main paper pattern is the introduction of numerical value-based questions. These questions do not have options, and students have to enter the numerical value as the answer. These questions do not have negative marking, and students can attempt as many numerical value-based questions as they want. This change is aimed at testing the conceptual understanding of the students, rather than their ability to guess the correct answer from the given options.

Another important change in the JEE Main paper pattern is the reduction in the total number of questions in each section. The number of questions in each section has been reduced from 30 to 25, and the total marks for each section have been reduced from 120 to 100. This change is aimed at reducing the exam stress on the students and giving them more time to solve each question.

For B.Arch Students

The JEE Main paper pattern also includes a separate paper for the B.Arch course. This paper consists of three parts - Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing Test. The total marks for this paper are 400, with Mathematics and Aptitude Test carrying 200 marks and Drawing Test carrying 100 marks. The Mathematics and Aptitude Test sections have the same number of questions and marking scheme as Paper 1. However, the Drawing Test is evaluated for creativity and originality and is not subject to negative marking.
